Doncaster Wool Market
Services involved
Project Overview
The Wool Market is a Grade II Listed single-storey structure built in 1863 with a wrought and cast-iron frame. Forming a key part of Doncaster’s historic market district, it sits on the eastern edge of the market square alongside the Corn Exchange, Fish Market and Market Hall.
The project involved the refurbishment of 2,187m² as the first phase of the Council’s wider regeneration strategy—aimed at creating a more vibrant, safe and accessible town centre destination. Our role was to help transform the building into a high-quality, modern market environment while respecting its historic fabric.
Mechanical & Electrical Services
We developed the full technical design of the building services to support the refurbishment and future adaptability of the market.
On the electrical side, we focused on providing flexible power options for stalls along with improved energy performance through modern lighting and smart controls.
Our mechanical approach prioritised passive design principles: the main market area is naturally ventilated via perimeter openings and high-level perforated mesh screens. For the food stalls, we designed an extraction system that addressed tight spatial constraints, minimised energy use, and offered future flexibility. A centralised plant with twin ductwork networks allows the system to operate only when required, reducing unnecessary energy consumption and improving long-term adaptability.
