A Calming, Dignified Space for People in Crisis

The 136 Suite at the Longley Centre is a Health-Based Place of Safety for individuals detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act. Designed to feel safe and welcoming, it offers a calm, therapeutic environment at a time of acute distress.

Co-designed with experts by experience, Trust staff, and the Capital and Therapeutic Environments team, the suite blends safety, comfort, and dignity. Every element—from lighting to artwork—supports wellbeing and reduces stress.

Key Features

Private, durable suites with ensuites for comfort and safety

 Calming décor and noise-dampening carpet

Circadian and sensory lighting to promote rest and relaxation

Interactive screens for TV, radio, and video calls

Landscape artwork by Jill Ray to “bring the outside in”

Outdoor courtyards and customisable temperature controls

Our Role

We worked closely with the Trust and the wider design team to deliver the enabling works that allowed the new Health Based Place of Safety to be created. This began with developing new office accommodation so the existing space could be safely refurbished and transformed into the 136 Suite.

During the main design phase, we carried out non-intrusive surveys, verified as-fitted information, and assessed existing infrastructure to ensure it met the project’s technical and operational requirements.

We also supported the Trust in achieving their innovative project aspirations, helping to integrate human-centric, mood-controlled lighting and low-carbon heating solutions that enhance both sustainability and the service user experience.

Throughout the build, we provided on-site technical support, witnessing system testing and commissioning to ensure a smooth and successful handover.

We’re proud that the completed facility was shortlisted for the Design in Mental Health Awards 2024 – Refurbishment Project of the Year, recognising the quality and impact of this collaborative project.
